When choosing furniture for their homes, people often focus on style first. But as a furniture designer, I have always believed that the material itself plays an equally important role in shaping the character and atmosphere of a space.
Two natural materials that have remained popular for generations are rattan and wood. Both bring warmth and texture to interiors, and both have a rich history of furniture craftsmanship.
Yet they offer very different qualities.
Having worked with both materials throughout my career, I am often asked: Which is better, rattan furniture or wood furniture?
The answer depends on how you use your furniture, the atmosphere you want to create, and the practical needs of your home. Rather than one material being better than the other, each has its own strengths.
The Natural Appeal of Wood Furniture
Wood has long been one of the most trusted materials in furniture making. A well-crafted solid wood furniture piece can last for decades and become a much-loved part of the home.
One of the main reasons wood remains so popular is its strength and durability. Hardwoods such as walnut, oak and ash provide a strong foundation for furniture while showcasing distinctive natural grain patterns.
From a design perspective, wooden dining tables and dining chairs bring warmth and structure to a room. They anchor the space visually and create a feeling of permanence.
For dining areas in particular, wood is often a practical choice because it can withstand everyday use while developing more character over time.
The Lightweight Beauty of Rattan Furniture
Rattan offers a completely different character.
Unlike solid wood, rattan is naturally flexible and lightweight. This allows skilled artisans to create woven designs that feel airy, relaxed and full of texture.
Handwoven rattan furniture is often associated with natural interiors, Scandinavian-inspired spaces and relaxed coastal homes. Rattan chairs, cabinets and decorative pieces can introduce visual interest without making a room feel heavy.
This makes rattan particularly useful when you want to soften a space or introduce a more relaxed connection with nature.
Durability: Wood vs Rattan
One of the key differences between wood and rattan is how they are typically used.
Solid wood furniture generally offers greater structural strength, making it well suited to dining tables, desks, storage units and other pieces that need to support substantial weight.
Rattan furniture is also capable of lasting for many years when properly cared for, particularly in indoor environments. Its lighter construction and natural flexibility make it especially suitable for chairs, lounge furniture and decorative pieces.
The right choice therefore depends less on which material is inherently better and more on what you need the furniture to do.
Design Style: Grounded or Airy?
Wood and rattan also create different visual effects within an interior.
Wood furniture tends to feel grounded, warm and timeless. Natural grain patterns and deeper wood tones can add depth and create a strong visual foundation.
Rattan, meanwhile, introduces a more light and relaxed atmosphere. Its woven structure creates texture while allowing the surrounding space to remain visually open.
One of my favourite combinations is a solid wood dining table paired with rattan dining chairs. The table provides structure and warmth, while the woven chairs add softness and texture.
The result is a dining space that feels natural, balanced and welcoming.
Sustainability and Natural Materials
Both wood and rattan can be attractive choices for homeowners who value natural materials and more considered furniture design.
Rattan grows relatively quickly and can regenerate naturally, making it a renewable material when harvested and managed responsibly.
Wood can also be a responsible choice when sourced from well-managed forests. Its long lifespan is another important consideration. Furniture that remains useful and beautiful for many years is less likely to need frequent replacement.
However, sustainability depends on more than simply choosing a natural material. Responsible sourcing, manufacturing practices, product longevity and proper care all play a role.
Choosing the Right Material for Your Home
Rather than asking which material is better, I often encourage people to consider where and how the furniture will be used.
Choose wood when you want:
- Strong, durable furniture
- A timeless and grounded appearance
- Natural grain and character
- A sturdy foundation for dining or living spaces
Choose rattan when you want:
- A lighter visual appearance
- Woven texture and natural character
- A relaxed, organic atmosphere
- Furniture that complements smaller or brighter interiors
And you do not necessarily have to choose just one. Combining wood and rattan can create a beautifully layered interior where each material brings out the best qualities of the other.
A Designer's Perspective
Throughout my career, I have learned that good furniture design is rarely about choosing one material over another.
It is about understanding how materials interact with each other, with the room and with the people who use the furniture every day.
Wood brings strength and permanence.
Rattan brings lightness and texture.
When thoughtfully combined, they can create interiors that feel warm, natural and timeless without becoming overly formal.
At Furnt, this balance between natural materials, practical function and thoughtful design is something I return to again and again.
Final Thoughts
Natural materials have a way of making a home feel more connected, comfortable and authentic.
Wood and rattan each bring something different to an interior. Wood offers strength, warmth and timeless character, while rattan introduces lightness, texture and a relaxed sense of nature.
For me as a designer, the most interesting spaces are not those that follow a single design rule. They are the ones where different materials, textures and forms work together naturally.
So, when choosing between rattan and wood furniture, perhaps the better question is not which one is better? It is how can each material make your home feel more like you?
