Fit Guide: Will Your Furniture Fit? Here’s How to Check

Jul 03, 2025Jacob Y

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of new furniture arriving. But before the van pulls up and the unpacking begins, there’s one important thing to tick off your list: will it fit?

Whether it’s a plush new sofa or a beautifully crafted sideboard, checking your access routes and room measurements in advance can save time, hassle, and disappointment.

Here’s our easy step-by-step guide to make sure your new piece can get through the door and into place without a hitch.

🚛 Before Delivery: Plan for Parking and Access

It’s easy to focus on getting furniture through the front door—but don’t forget about getting it off the van first.

  • Check if there’s a loading bay, driveway or parking space near your home that’s suitable for a delivery van.

  • If you live in a flat or busy street, make sure the driver will be able to stop close by.

  • Let us know in advance if there are any access restrictions—gates, intercoms, or limited parking zones.

Also important: Keep an eye out for any roadworks, local closures, or events that might affect access on the day. A quick check of your council website or local travel alerts can save a delivery-day headache.

🏡 1. Map Out the Delivery Route

Start at the entrance and walk the route your furniture will take to its new spot. Keep an eye out for tight corners, narrow hallways, or anything that might need moving out of the way temporarily.

🚪 2. Measure Your Doorways

It might sound obvious, but many deliveries get stuck at the door—literally.

  • Measure the height and width of your door frames.

  • Check how far your doors can open—door closers, handles or walls behind them might limit space.

  • Compare those measurements with the item’s size—especially if it’s coming assembled.

Top tip: If the door doesn’t open fully, measure from the inside edge of the open door to the opposite frame. A few centimetres can make all the difference!

📏 3. Don’t Forget Your Hallways

Hallways, especially in older properties, can be tricky to navigate with bulky furniture. Move anything that might be in the way, like shoe racks or slim furniture, and measure the tightest points just to be safe.

🛗 4. Live in a Flat? Check the Lift

If you’ve got a lift in your building, it can make delivery much easier—but it’s not always a guarantee.

  • Check the lift’s dimensions to make sure your furniture will fit inside.

  • If your building has a concierge or managing agent, they can usually confirm exact measurements.

  • Important: Contact your building management to check there are no lift maintenance works scheduled for that day. There’s nothing worse than your delivery turning up—and the lift’s out of order!

If the lift isn’t suitable or available, let us know—we can plan for stair access instead.

🌀 5. Measure the Landing and Stairwells

For upstairs deliveries, take a few moments to check your stairs and landing. These are often where space gets tight.

  • Measure the ceiling height above the stairs.

  • Check the width of the stairwell and the size of any landings.

  • Think about whether furniture will need to be tilted to get around corners.

🙋♀️ Furniture Fit FAQs

Measure the height and width of your doorways and compare them with your furniture’s dimensions. Don’t forget to account for how far the door opens—hinges and handles can reduce space.

Q: What if I live in a flat or apartment?

Measure your building’s lift or stairwell dimensions, and check with your building manager for any restrictions. Let Furnt know in advance if stair access is required.

Yes! Our team is happy to guide you through measurements and access planning. Just get in touch before delivery day.
